Currently the Public Works Division is providing services by appointment only as staff who issues permits / answers questions is often in the field and not in the office. Please contact the staff member directly to schedule an appointment. If you do not already have a contact, please call 510 741-2065 or e-mail ([email protected]). Many questions can be answered here online. 

The Public Works Department is responsible for improving and maintaining the public infrastructure and assets within the City. The City's public infrastructure and assets include the following:

  • Roads and Bridges
  • Streetlights
  • Signals
  • Street Trees
  • Storm Water Collection System
  • Parks, Park Play Structures, Play Fields, Bathrooms, Park Trees
  • Wastewater Collection System
  • Water Pollution Control Plant
  • City Owned Buildings
  • City Owned Fleet Vehicles

Need a Permit?
The Public Works Department requires property owners and contractors to obtain a permit for any work that the is in or adjacent to the street or Public Right of Way, such as:  sewer lateral replacements, sidewalk/driveway work, fences adjacent to the sidewalk, underground work (also known as Street Openings), house moving and site grading. An encroachment permit is required by Public Works for work in the public right-of-way.  Submittals are made electronically by submitting all required documentation as follows:

Public Works Availability by Phone or a Scheduled Appointment:
M-Th:  8:00 am- 12:00 pm & 1:00 pm - 4:30 pm
Closed for Lunch 12:00 - 1:00 pm
Closed on Friday

Schedule inspections by phoning (510) 724-8914.  You will need the permit number and the associated inspection code.  Inspections are automatically scheduled for the next business day unless you request a different day.
